| | | Apple Tree - Dabinett Origin: Somerset, early 1900s Apple Taste: Bittersweet Type: Cider Flowering Group : 4 Rootstock: M106 or M25 Size : Maiden Harvest : October Vigour : Medium
Dabinett is a good quality cider apple, originating just down the A303 from us, in Middle Lambrook, where local William Dabinett found it growing in a hedge as a wilding. Dabinett is a good enough apple that it is used to make single varietal cider, like Kingston Black and Yarlington Mill, so if you've only got space for a couple of trees is a natural choice. It's not to be confused with Black Dabinett, known hereabouts as Tommy Rodford, which is a seedling of this variety.
Supplier : R.V.Roger Ltd. We donate half of our profit on sales of Dabinett apple trees to Common Ground
Depending on the tannin and acidity of their juice, cider apples are divided into bittersweets, bittersharps, sweets, and sharps. Most cider orchards are a mixture of varieties, making a blended cider, but there are some individual ciders made - for example, Kingston Black, Dabinett, and Yarlington Mill. They will only grow in the West, where conditions suit them, and are particularly concentrated in Somerset and Herefordshire. See our section on Pollination Groups to help you select your apple trees. The rootstock for all our apple trees is the most vigorous available. We try to offer as many apple varieties as we can on M25 rootstock, which will produce the standard trees of a traditional orchard, where they would be planted between 6 and 8 metres apart. Please refer to our size guide for details. Like all our apple trees, we offer Dabinett bare root. At the height of the lifting season - between November and March - there may be up to a months delay between placing the order and dispatching due to pressure of orders, which are dealt with in date sequence, and the weather. Orders for apple trees from March to September are confirmed in late October/ early November ready for dispatch from November. Please consult our planting and care guide on receipt of your order.
