Nonpareil was traditionally introduced from France by a Jesuit in the 16th century, although its first documentary record dates from 1696, in London. Grown in a sunny spot for the sugars to form fully, this ancient variety of apple tree can produce outstandingly-well flavoured fruit. Highly prized throughout the C18th and C19th, Nonpareil was often grown in pots and used as a decorative feature in parterres, as the fruit hangs on the tree for a long time.
