| | | Trees for Heavy Soils: Aspen (Populus tremula) "The quaking aspen light and thin" only lives for 50 years. Their leaves tremble in the wind and make a noise like a "rustling whisper". They are common throughout Europe, partly as they regenerate so quickly. They demand light and are wind tolerant - a good pioneer species. They also like heavy damp conditions, so can be used to improve clay soils. Their habit means they are often associated with a rich understorey of wildflowers. They are associated with over 90 insects and are the food plant of the Green Hairstreak. Aspen do best in cooler climes and were among the first species to re-establish themselves in Britain in the post-glacial period. Although individual trees are short lived they spread by sucker. Provenance certificates are available on request for the smaller sized trees, which are all sourced from the Southwest of England.
