| | | Trees for Heavy Soils: Bird Cherry (Prunus padus) Bird Cherry is a small tree found in the north, with pretty white flowers and bittersweet edible cherries which the birds crop. It's a very hardy tree that helpfully unlike the Wild Cherry does not sucker, so is often found on its own. Orchard ermine moth larvae feed on it and can strip it in the summer. Cherries are small deciduous trees, with beautiful blossom in the spring and colour in the autumn. Their ornamental, compact form makes the Bird Cherry a useful urban tree, which does well in heavy soils. Small mammals and birds eat their bitter fruit. They are, sadly, particularly vulnerable to Honey Fungus and canker. Provenance certificates are available on request for the smaller size trees, which are from the Southwest of England.
