 | | | Trees for Exposed Sites: Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) Like Hawthorn, Blackthorn is a fine traditional hedge plant, having needle like spines, but it is slow growing but suckers freely. Its habit makes it a fabulous refuge for small birds and mammals, who feast on its sloes, and a raft of moth and butterfly caterpillars feed on it. Among the lepidoptera for which it's a foodplant are the Brown Hairstreak, Small Tortoiseshell and Short-cloaked moth. It is tough as old boots and tolerant of a wide range of conditions, including exposed sites. As a hedging plant lays well and forms a good stockproof - and people proof - barrier. Its prolific white flowers are an important nectar source in spring. Blackthorn wood is hard and prized for walking sticks, but more useful are its sloes; sloe gin is the most delightful and simple alternative to Port. Provenance certificates are available on request for these plants, which are from the Southwest of England.
