| | | Wildlife Hedge Plants: Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) Blackthorn is a fine traditional hedge plant, slow growing but suckering freely (unlike Hawthorn) and having needle like spines. It is a wonderful wildlife hedge plant and is an important constituent of our conservation hedge mix. Its habit makes it a fabulous refuge for small birds and mammals, who feast on its sloes, and a raft of moth and butterfly caterpillars feed on it. It is very hardy, and as a hedging plant lays well and forms a good stockproof - and people proof - barrier. Its prolific white flowers are an important nectar source in early spring. Blackthorn wood is hard and prized for walking sticks, but more useful to my mind are its sloes... Provenance certificates are available on request for Blackthorn plants, which are from the Southwest of England.
