 | | | Shade Loving Perennials: Comfrey (Symphytum) This vigorous perennial will tolerate deep shade and provide useful groundcover. Bumblebees love its small bell shaped flowers. The three commonest naturally occurring species are widely used by herbalists, who called the plant "Bone-set" in the Middle Ages. Today it is also known as "Knitbone". It has long been a herbal remedy for treating wounds, containing a chemical called allantoin which promotes healing. It is now also widely used for making liquid plant feed. Like the Foxglove, which it is often found with in shady spots, poisonous if eaten. We also offer Symphytum officinale in our herb collections.
