Common Oak (Quercus robur)

The Pedunculate, Common, or English Oak prefers heavier soils and will tolerate flooding, even by seawater. Its masses of acorns are very helpful feed for the pigs - and a host of small mammals. Oaks support more fauna than any other trees in the UK; of the 284 insect species they include, in their canopy, the Purple Hairstreak. Its wood has, of course, been used for a vast array of products - ships, barrels, buildings - since time immemorial, and it was widely planted for its timber in the 18th and early 19th centuries. It is the supreme native hardwood; the tree's cultural, ecological, and economic significance give it a unique place in British history. Although they come in many shapes and sizes, ancient stag headed trees up to 1000 years old are immediately recognisable landmarks across the country. We include English Oak trees in our mixed native woodland collections.
Oak trees are today facing the potentially catastrophic threat of Phytophthora ("Sudden Oak Death").
Provenance certificates are available on request for non standard sized English Oak trees, which are from the Southwest of England.
