John Downie grows up to 8m, producing very fine ornamental conical crab apples are bright orange and scarlet, and blossom white like Golden Hornet. Very prolific, John Downie is a great pollinator of other varieties. It is a Victorian variety particularly recommended for making crab apple jelly. Hardy, frost tolerant, but like most crab prefers sun and well drained soil.

All our crab apple trees are bare root. At the height of the lifting season - between November and March - there may be up to a months delay between placing the order and dispatching due to pressure of orders, which are dealt with in date sequence, and the weather. Orders for crab apples from March to September are confirmed in late October/ early November ready for dispatch from November. Please consult our planting and care guide on receipt of your order.
