Boundary Hedge Plants: Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna)

The Hawthorn or Quickthorn is a fast growing tree, beautiful in flower. Its habit makes it an ideal refuge for small birds, who feast on its red berries. It is tolerant of most conditions including lighter soils, and as a hedging plant lays well and forms a good stockproof - and people proof - barrier. Unlike Blackthorn it does not sucker, although the two trees are closely linked in mythology. The hawthorn was much less common in times past, but during the Enclosure movements of the 18th and 19th centuries over 200,000 miles of hawthorn hedges were planted. It remains a common boundary hedge plant and is an important constituent of our conservation hedge mix.
In earlier times it was viewed with veneration, and often associated with the Christ story, with its combination of thorns and red berries - for example the Glastonbury Thorn legend. In Anglo Saxon times it was often used as a boundary marker. Although known as the May Tree, it will flower anytime from March to as late as June, at higher altitudes. Its numbers and abundant flowers mean it is a very significant source of Spring nectar and edible winter berries, from which healers used to make a poultice for drawing splinters and whitlows.
Provenance certificates are available on request for Quickthorn plants, which are from the Southwest of England.
