The site is largely open, with a hedge running along its eastern edge and a newly dug pond with liner of about 10 X 20 metres with a 1 to 2 metre surround. At the northern end of the area enclosed by a post and rail fence is a flat section of about 75 square metres, which, as the pond banks, is clay subsoil from the excavation work. In order to introduce a varied and appropriate plant mix, we will be using our water margin plug plants for the pond banks and wet meadow seed mix for the flat section. Our first job was to kill the dock and nettle at the north end of the site, which we sprayed - very carefully - with herbicide.

Planted with 5 trays of mixed perennial wildflower plugs for water margins. With the help of a gaggle of Year 6s we sowed the surrounding banks and flat area with the wet meadow seed mix using plenty of sand to bulk out the mixture, although how efficiently time will tell !

Underneath all the Oak leaves the seed mixtures are now well established. Click here to see more and bigger photos.
