 | | | Perennials for Sun or Part Shade: Lavender, large size (Lavandula) Among lavender's many virtues is its value as a wildlife plant. Honey bees are particularly associated with it - they will work a fragrant hedge of it en masse at the height of summer - but other bees, butterflies, and moths benefit from it too. There is too much competition from other users ( us !) for us to leave the flowering stalks on for the birds over the winter, but some do . The flowered shoots (NOT the old wood) must be pruned, however, to prevent plants getting leggy. We sell varieties of English (L. angustifolia), French (L. stoechas), and Lavandin (L. x intermedia). x intermedia flowers after English lavender, and both are hardy. French lavender is only properly half hardy, and its flowers have distinctive butterfly bracts. It is available in either large or small pot sizes depending on the time of year.
