Perennials for Sun or Part Shade: Mullein (Verbascum)
Mullein's large furry leaves are the food of the Mullein Moth caterpillar, which will defoliate a plant if left to themselves. The tall flower spikes are good nectar sources, and seedheads good for the birds - we sell native species in various seed mixes and plug plant collections. Among the ancients, mullein was attributed with the power of driving away evil spirits; it was the plant Ulysses used to protect himself from Circe. Apparently cottagers dipped the stems and leaves in tallow to act as candles, calling the plant 'Candlewick', and it was also used to stop coughing in cows ('Cows' Lungwort').

Varieties:
'Caribbean Crush': eye catching pink and yellow
'Cotswold Queen': yellow brown with purple centre
'Helen Johnson': apricot with dark eye, RHS AGM (illustrated)
If we cannot find exactly the variety you would like in the nursery at the moment and we can find a very close alternative, we hope it is acceptable to supply it in lieu. Before we do so, however, we will ask you if you would be happy to accept a substitute.
