 | | | Nest Box - Tawny Owl The Tawny is another owl in decline. Although the most noticeable, because it's the noisiest and most common, numbers are now back to where they were when it was persecuted in the 19th century. This box is made out of FSC plywood and is also available flatpacked. Although this is Britain's most common owl, numbers have been in steady decline since the mid 1980s. It prefers more woodland habitat than the Barn Owl, and takes to nest boxes less easily. Owl boxes should ideally be hung 3 to 5 metres high, and have a layer of woodshavings or similar on the floor which ideally be cleared out every few years (in the winter). This is easier said than done; although our boxes are lightweight it needs at least two people and a deal of care. You may want to use our installation and siting service.
