Nest Box - Collection for Environments With Cover

A collection of boxes to give you all you need for a larger sized garden or small holding - the perfect house warming present, or a cost effective way to replace all your old wooden boxes.
This collection, for sites with cover, consists of four boxes in brown and green, including a box primarily for wrens and a general purpose box. It also includes a Robin box for placing in ivy or honeysuckle and a secure predator-proof box particularly for Robins, Wrens, Wagtails, and Redstarts. If the site is more open, please look at our alternative collection.
We sell one make of nest box for songbirds, which we believe is the best in the market. Schwegler make durable and environmentally friendly wood-concrete ("woodcrete") boxes, which have been developed in close collaboration with leading experts.
They are not cheap, but their construction means they will last for at least 20-25 years, which means they represent excellent value over wooden boxes. They are also very well insulated; cool for chicks in the summer and warm for winter roosting.
In each nest box the size of the brood chamber, diameter of the entrance hole and many other features have been adapted to the needs and behaviour of particular species.
Smaller nest boxes can be hung between 1 and 3 m high, but it is easier to clean them at eye level or below.
Do use the Aluminium nail supplied inside the box if fixing to a tree, as it will cause it much less damage.
Think about access for predators, which will typically be squirrels or, in gardens, cats, and avoid siting boxes too close to bird tables or bird feeders.
Species such as Robin and Spotted Flycatcher, which nest in open-fronted nest boxes, prefer sites that are hidden from view, so attach your box to a wall or fence that has shrubs and creepers growing against it.
The entrance hole for any box should usually face south-east - i.e. not in a sun trap, and sheltered from the prevailing weather.
