Plug Planting guide

5 wildflower plugs will cover one square metre (unless you are planting for a green roof in which case use 10), and are best planted on bare soil. Plant them randomly, although they will look better in small groups of the same species. These perennials will take a while to get going, so if you want results in the first year sow a cornfield mix over them to give you instant colour. You can also sow a meadow mix over the whole area to add grasses and more perennials.
You can plant plugs (unlike wild flower seed) in grass, so long as it is scarified and cut as low as possible beforehand, and not too vigorous. If it is, mow it, scarify it, and rake Yellow Rattle seed into the grass to reduce its vigour. Listen here to the thoughts of Herbiseed's Steve Morton on the relative merits of plugs and seeds.
We run courses on meadow creation and management and offer design and ecological survey services.
