Red Currants and White Currants (Ribes sativum)

Redcurrants are naturally found in wetter situations in southern England. The flowers are a prolific early nectar source for bees and the currants have a number of culinary uses, including jelly. Like Blackcurrants they are vulnerable to frost damage, so should not be planted on exposed sites.

Varieties:
Laxton's No.1: fruits mid July, origin c.1914
Red Lake: compact growth, fruits late July
Whitecurrant - White Grape: delicious, heavy cropper

Soil type: Fertile, moist, well drained
Bare root bush, 20/30cm clear stem
