Robinia pseudoacacia (Black Locust)

Robinia pseudoacacia, or Black Locust, is a graceful tree with attractive pinnate foliage, coming into leaf late. It is a native of the South Eastern U.S., where its hard rot resistant wood was used for making fence posts. Black Locust was introduced to Britain in the 17th century as a prized specimen tree. It flowers in early summer, producing cascades of beautiful fragrant white pea-like flowers which yield high quality honey in hot weather. Robinia pseudoacacia is fast growing and tolerates poor dry soils, although its seeds, leaves and bark are all poisonous, so it should not be planted where livestock or children have access.
