 | | | Trees for Exposed Sites: Rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) The Rowan, or Mountain Ash, prefers cool conditions and any soil other than heavy clay and calcareous. They have all year round interest; like Crab Apples, another small hardy tree, they have pretty blossom (in their case in June) and large bunches of red berries, which are eaten by birds like chaffinches, and small mammals. Its foliage turns nicely in the autumn. Rowans often used to be planted close to houses to protect them against witches and now as small, hardy and striking trees they are often planted along streets, although they will do equally well half way up a mountain! Provenance certificates are available on request for the smaller sized Rowan trees, which are from the Southwest of England.
