 | | | Shrubs for Light Soils: Sea-Buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) This spiny shrub isn't actually a Buckthorn, but is a native species, originally found on the east coast. It is extremely hardy and salt tolerant. Its bright orange berries are eaten by birds and are a particularly important winter food for Fieldfares and Thrushes in particular. In the Neolithic they were also a (rather unpleaseant) staple for humans. Today we use it as a base for some soaps. It is also a food plant for Emperor and Ash Pug moth larvae, among others. Provenance certificates are available on request for Sea-Buckthorn plants, which are from the Southwest of England.
