 | | | Trees for Heavy Soils: Wild Cherry (Prunus avium)
Wild Cherries are fast growing short lived ornamental trees with high biodiversity value and all year round interest. Prolific white blossom attracts bees and insects in the spring, and birds and small mammals feed on its bitter fruit in autumn, when its leaves turn orange-red. They prefer relatively sheltered positions and lighter soils.
Wild Cherry, known as Gean in Scotland, sucker freely - in contrast to Bird Cherry - and are often found proliferating at the woodland edge. They are, sadly, particularly vulnerable to Honey Fungus and canker.

Please note that standard sizes relate to tree girths in cm. See our planting and size guide for details and tips on planting. All these trees are bare root, and are consequently available for delivery from November until March. During the lifting season there may be up to two week’s delay between placing the order and dispatching (longer for standards), due to weather conditions or pressure of orders, which are dealt with in date sequence. Orders placed between March and September are confirmed in September ready for dispatch from November.
