| | | Trees for Light Soils: Wild Cherry (Prunus avium) Wild Cherries are fast growing short lived ornamental trees with high biodiversity value and all year round interest. Prolific white blossom attracts bees and insects in the spring, and birds and small mammals feed on its bitter fruit in autumn, when its leaves turn orange-red. Wild Cherries were cultivated and eaten as mazzards, principally in the West Country, and are enjoying a renaissance. They prefer relatively sheltered positions and lighter soils. Wild Cherry, known as Gean in Scotland, sucker freely - in contrast to Bird Cherry - and are often found proliferating at the woodland edge. They are, sadly, particularly vulnerable to Honey Fungus and canker. Provenance certificates are available on request for the smaller size trees, which are from the Southwest of England. These trees are all bare root, and are consequently available for delivery from November until March ( please ask if you are interested in pot grown plants). Orders placed between March and September are confirmed in October ready for dispatch from November.
