Perennials for Sun or Part Shade: Witch hazel (Hamamelis)

Hamamelis are an excellent source of pollen for honey bees in the very early spring. Witch hazel flowers come in a dazzling array of of fragrant frost resistant colours. They look wonderfully exotic as specimen trees, flowering on bare wood, and have a sweet scent. They are happy in sun or semi-shade, and prefer neutral to acid soils. The Witch Hazel came from America; early settlers used its branches for water divining as they had done Hazel branches in Britain. All the varieties we sell have the RHS AGM and are supplied as larger plants.

Varieties:
Hamamelis x intermedia 'Diane': deep bronze/red flowers
Hamamelis x intermedia 'Jelena': orange/red flowers
Hamamelis x intermedia 'Pallida': sulphur yellow, sweet scent
Hamamelis mollis: citron yellow, highly scented
If we cannot find exactly the variety you would like in the nursery at the moment and we can find a very close alternative, we hope it is acceptable to supply it in lieu. Before we do so, however, we will ask you if you would be happy to accept a substitute.
