Catalpa bignonioides (Southern Catalpa or Indian Bean Tree)
Catalpa bignonoides, the Indian bean tree, is a native of the southeastern US growing to around 18m. It has large leaves like the Foxglove Tree but is in leaf by the time it flowers. Bizarrely, these leaves secrete nectar, and their size means Catalpa bignonoides should be planted in a sheltered spot. The trees prefers full sun, however. They enjoy a range of soil conditions including heavy clay. Catalpa's large white flowers are followed by thin, bean like pods - hence bean tree. Catalpa bignonoides is recommended for bees by The British Beekeepers' Association.
