Apple Tree - Ashmead's Kernel
Origin: Gloucester early 18th century
Apple Taste: Strong sweet-sharp
Flowering Group : 4
Rootstock: M106 or M25
Size : Maiden
Vigour : Medium
Ashmead's Kernel has apples with rich golden brown semi-russeted skin and firm flesh. A good choice for a sweet flavour with some russeting. Cropping can be irregular, but Ashmead's Kernel remains a fantastic flavoured apple for the connoiseur, including Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, who ranks it as one of his favourites eating apples. Ashmead's Kernel is one of only two varieties of eating apple we are planting at our new house.
