Downton Pippin is a cross between Orange Pippin and Golden Pippin, and was named after Downton Castle in Shropshire - although it would make a lovely gift for Downton Abbey fans! An old apple of impeccable class, raised by a Mr. Knight - whose brother owned Downton Castle, where it is still found in old orchards nearby. Although it's now rare it is a useful and tasty apple, popular with the Victorians. We have listed Downton Pippin as an eating apple but it will also cook well.
