Cornus sanguinea, common dogwood
Cornus sanguinea, Common dogwood, in flower

Dogwood (Cornus sanguinea)

Common Dogwood, Cornus sanguinea, is a large, colourful and versatile native shrub. It does well in most conditions and soils and suckers freely, making it a good hedging plant for wet soils in particular, although it lays poorly. Dogwood's all year round interest is hard to beat; red spring twigs and autumn foliage, delicate white flowers in the spring, and black berries. All the native plants we sell - including dogwood - are grown in the UK from seed collected here.

Common Dogwood (Cornus sanguinea)

Dogwood was known to Chaucer as "Whipple Tree", and the origins of its current name are obscure. They are sometimes said to lie in the Anglo-Saxon "dag" (skewer or dagger), for which the plants hard wood might have been used - it was also used for toothpicks. Possibly they might refer to dogberries not being fit for a dog to eat, although the birds like them.

Plants For Sale

Like all our native trees and hedging, our Dogwood plants have UK provenance and origin - that's to say they're British grown using seed from trees here. These 2 year old 60-90cm plants will be grown peat free in either Kent, the Welsh borders, or Yorkshire. We sell them in multiples of 5.

Suppliers: RV Roger, Oakover Trees, RJ Trees and Hedging
