Mazzard Cherry - Small Black

Prunus avium 'Small Black' (or probably 'Small Dun') is a variety of edible wild cherry (Prunus avium), or "mazzard". Small Black is a tree similar to Dun; vigorous and attractive, with upright and dense habit. Its fruit is only slightly smaller than Large Black. Mazzards are now very unusual trees, historically associated with the West Country, and the varieties we sell were found in North Devon. Mazzards were, however, once found across England. Michael Gee has written a helpful introduction, "Mazzards" (The Mint Press). Attractive spring blossom is helpful for pollinators, including bees.
