Hedge Plants: Edible Hedge

This edible hedge plant mix is excellent for wildlife as well as looking attractive - with some treats for our kitchens too! Each pack includes a mix of 50 plants, enough for 10m of a double row staggered hedge.

After Spring blossom the hedge will be laden with nuts and fruit in the autumn. Sloes, apples, berries, haws - great for cooks and foragers too! It includes only native British species, plus some soft fruit bushes for extra interest. Jams, jellies, drinks - these plants will keep on giving. The hedge will be head high after three years or so, depending on conditions. The hedgerow plants here will thrive in a wide variety of sites and situations, including a north facing site.

Our edible hedge pack contains a good mixture of plants. We are currently offering 10 of each of these plants in every 50 plant pack:

Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa): Blackthorn gives structure to the hedge, suckering freely. Enjoy the blossom and use the sloes for gin or whatever takes your fancy! Alternatively leave them for the birds.

Wild cherry (Prunus avium): Lovely Spring blossom, of course, and - rather inedible for us! - cherries in autumn.

Hazel (Corylus avellana): invaluable hedge plant, nuts a boon for dormice and other mammals as well as cooks.

Crab Apple (Malus sylvestris): the native version! Vigorous small tree, producing masses of blossom and fruit in a good year.

Common dog rose (Rosa canina): attractive haws can be used for all sorts of hedgerow recipes. Terrific source of vitamin C.

Additionally, there'll be a potted Blackberry (various cultivars) in each 50 plants pack.

Hedge Plants For Sale

These plants are 60-90cm tall and one to two years old. They are all grown in the UK from UK stock. All our hedge plant suppliers are members of the gold standard Plant Healthy scheme.

We sell them in packs of 50, which is enough for 10m of hedge. We recommend planting in two staggered rows at least 50cm apart. If you would like to find out more about how to plant and maintain your hedge, please look at our blog .

These edible hedge mix plants are bare root (with the exception of blackberries), so they are available for delivery from November until the end of March. During the lifting season there may be up to four weeks delay between placing the order and despatch, due to weather conditions or pressure of orders, which are dealt with in date sequence. Orders for hedge plants placed between the end of March and October are dispatched from November.

Please looks at our tips for planting and initial care of hedge whips. You can find out more about the history of hedges here.
