Halesia carolina (Carolina silverbell or Snowdrop tree)

Halesia carolina hails from eastern North America and proliferates in the forests of the southern Appalachians. Its masses of pendulous white flowers lead it to be known variously as Silverbell or the Snowdrop tree, and it produces curious winged fruit popular with small mammals and birds. A lovely and unusual alternative to a Cherry. In the wild it is a small tree of the forest understorey and an important nectar source for bees; here it is recommended by The British Beekeepers' Association as an ornamental.
