Paulownia tomentosa or imperialis (Foxglove tree)

Paulownia tomentosa produces its fragrant pink-blue foxglove like flowers before it comes into leaf like Halesia Carolina/b> and looks very exotic to British eyes. It is startlingly fast growing and has large attractive leaves similar to Catalpa bignonioides,</b></a>>!! which mean it needs a sheltered position. Although common in some parts of America and Japan where the climate really suits it, it is still pretty rare in the UK. A lovely specimen tree, and very tolerant of urban situations. Loved by bumblebees and winner of an RHS AGM.
