| | | Pre-planted coir rolls for ponds If you use a plastic or butyl liner for a new pond you will be faced with a problem when planting - your plants will have no growing medium. You can improvise or use baskets, but a much more elegant solution is to use pre-planted coir rolls or mats, particularly for steeper sides. Pre-planted with mixed native plants at 10 plants per metre, they will jump start your pond, as the plants are already well established when they arrive. They can be placed or positioned with stones or pegs/stakes on the sloping sides of the pond, where the coir will gradually just rot away. The usual mixture we use for rolls is Carex acutiformis (Lesser Pond Sedge) Juncus effusus (Soft Rush) Lythrum salicaria (Purple Loosestrife) Iris pseudacorus (Yellow Flag Iris) Phalaris arundinacea (Reed Canary Grass). These will grow happily with the roll positioned in water depths down to 50cm. We can grow them with other mixtures or monocultures on request. The 3m rolls (pictured) will fit in snugly on pond margins; we have a video on YouTube of Matthew Wilson working on a project in Yorkshire with one of our partners using coir rolls ona a pond project. Please ask if you are interested in coir rolls as prices will vary according volumes ordered, mix, and your location. Prices for the mats and rolls start from £27.50 per linear metre (excluding VAT) for under 6 metres, or two rolls, of a standard mix, plus shipping. We offer discounts for larger amounts.
