| | | Yellow Rattle (Rhinanthus minor) Seed Yellow Rattle (Rhinanthus minor) is an attractive, partially parasitic, annual wildflower of grasslands. Once Rattle, or Hay Rattle, is established it can reduce the competitive vigour of certain grasses by up to 50%, thus benefiting other sown wildflowers - see our resources section or listen hear to find out more about Yellow Rattle and its uses from Steve Morton of Herbiseed. You will find it included in a number of our mixes. The most suitable sites for Yellow Rattle will be grassland of low to medium fertility and with a balanced sward which is not dominated by coarse vigorous grasses. To sow Rattle into existing grass, cut or graze it short (25mm) and harrow, rake, or lightly disc, aiming to create up to 50% bare soil. We have done just this very successfully in Caroline's meadow. Yellow Rattle seed must be sown in autumn or early winter, say up to Christmas, as it needs to be chilled to trigger its germination the following spring. We recommend adding the seed to a newly established meadow after its first season. Rattle seems to have a pretty limited viability, so the seed needs to be as fresh as possible. If you would like 200 grammes or less and you have no other purchases to make - ie your overall order size is below our £50 normal minimum - please contact us on 01749 812355 to arrange payment and delivery.
Sowing Rate: Up to 1g per square metre. Rattle seed may be ordered in 0.1 kg increments from 0.1 kg upwards. Quantities up to 10 kilos at the kilo rate, thereafter prices on request.
Provenance: Berkshire We donate half of our profit on sales of Yellow Rattle seeds to The Bumblebee Conservation Trust
We strongly recommend reading up meadows before buying seed - see our resources section, brief guide to preparation and aftercare, and illustrative projects. We also run courses on meadow creation and management and offerdesign and ecological survey services. Although our seed has high germination rates, you need to be careful about initial care and establishing an annual regime. Don't be put off though - once you get the hang of it it's pretty straightforward.
