Wood Anemone (Anemone nemorosa)
Wood Anemone (Anemone nemorosa), or Windflower, is a beautiful native flower found in ancient woodland across the UK. It grows to around 20cm, prefers damp soils and dappled shade, and flowers in early spring before the leaf canopy closes. Wood Anemone flowers are delicate and white, nodding in the wind, and provide a good source of pollen for honey bees and bumblebees. Hoverflies are major pollinators for it too. Its seeds are, however, mostly infertile, and it mostly spreads very slowly through its roots, or rhizomes.
The rhizomes are freshly lifted to order in a nursery in Wales. Plant them horizontally at around 5cm depth of soil. Plant up to 10 per square metre.
