Spindle (Euonymus europaeus)
Spindle, or Spindleberry, is a very pretty shrub/small tree, tolerant of most well drained conditions including heavy soils, although found naturally on chalky ground. It bears tiny flowers in spring followed by dayglow pink capsules enclosing orange berries. Beware - these are known to herbalists as a strong purgative.
In the unlikely event you don't spot the seeds, you will see its beautiful Autumn foliage in ancient woods and in hedgerows south of Yorkshire. It was also valued in the past for its hard straight wood, which was used to make... spindles.
Provenance certificates are available on request for Spindle plants, which are from the Southwest of England.
