Details:

If you use a plastic or butyl liner for a new pond you will be faced with a problem when planting - your plants will have no growing medium. You can improvise or use baskets, but a much more elegant solution is to use pre-planted coir rolls or mats. The rolls are pre-planted with mixed native plants at 10 plants per metre, and are already well established when they arrive. PLEASE NOTE: the photos show the rolls before planting and after they have become established on site. They can be positioned on shelves or with stones or pegs/stakes on the sloping sides of the pond, where the coir will gradually just rot away. Excellent for larger ponds. The picture shows a coir roll without plants and one with, which is what we sell. See below for more details.

Pre-planted coir rolls for ponds

If you use a plastic or butyl liner for a new pond you will be faced with a problem when planting - your plants will have no growing medium. You can improvise or use baskets, but a much more elegant solution is to use pre-planted coir matting rolls or mats. Pre-planted with mixed native plants at 10 plants per metre, these rolls will jump start your pond, as the plants are already well established when they arrive. They can be positioned with stones or pegs/stakes on the sloping sides of the pond or on a shelf, where the coir will gradually just rot away. We can supply special Sweet Chestnut stakes on request.

The coir itself is imported from Sri Lanka, where it's a by-product from coconut production. It's organically and sustainably produced. It arrives here as highly compressed fibre, which massively reduces shipping volume, and the rolls are made by our suppliers. The coir takes 5 - 10 years to biodegrade, which is ideal. It's inert and pH neutral, and kept in place in a polypropylene net.

The usual mixture we use for rolls is Carex acutiformis (Lesser Pond Sedge), Juncus effusus (Soft Rush), Lythrum salicaria (Purple Loosestrife), Iris pseudacorus (Yellow Flag Iris), Phalaris arundinacea (Reed Canary Grass). This is what you can see in the established roll pictured, and is a mix of marginal plants which has been carefully developed over time. All these species are native and widespread in the UK, and it's a mix based on experience which will work well. Our plants are grown in the UK from UK origin seed.

These will grow happily with the roll positioned in water depths around an average of 20-30cm. We can grow them with other mixtures or monocultures on request. The 3mx0.3m rolls will fit in snugly on pond shelves; we have a video on YouTube of Matthew Wilson working on a project in Yorkshire with one of our partners using coir rolls on a a pond project. They've also been featured on Gardeners' World, along with the preplanted coir mats we also sell for pond banks.

Prices

Please contact us if you are interested in coir rolls as prices will vary according volumes ordered, mix, and your location. Let us know your delivery postcode and the total number of linear metres you require. I'm afraid we can't deliver to Northern Ireland.

Prices for the mats and rolls start from £26.95 per linear metre (excluding vat) for 6 linear metres, or two rolls of the standard mix, plus delivery by pallet. We offer discounts for larger amounts.

PLEASE NOTE: WE WILL NEED GOOD ACCESS TO DELIVER AS THIS PRODUCT COMES ON PALLETS. The rolls are pretty easy to handle, each weighing around 50kg as delivered.
