Apple Tree Collection - Welsh Cider Apples
Wales has a fine old cider making tradition. We're currently offering 3 trees of different traditional varieties of organically grown Welsh cider apple trees. These are:
Cadwaladr (pictured): Good quality bittersweet apple from Brecon.
Marged Nicolas: From Carmarthenshire, can also use as a cooker.
Perthyre: Originally grown from a tree found in Rockfield, Monmouthshire.
These three varieties will cross pollinate. There's another good reason for buying Welsh varieties for Welsh sites other than historic interest. They were of course specifically bred for Welsh conditions! The plants we sell are grown organically in Wales.
These plants are maidens and will grow to around 3.5m.
Rootstock: M106
Size: Maiden
Supplier: One Planet Organic
All our apple trees are bare root. If you do not plant your Welsh apples on receipt, they should be unwrapped and either heeled in, or left in their packaging in a cool frost free place before planting within 10 days. A small percentage of bare root plants will fail, but this can be considerably reduced by making sure the roots do not dry out while planting. Chose a frost and wind free damp day, and keep the whips in a bucket of water while planting out.
