Oxeye Daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare)
Leucanthemum vulgare or Oxeye daisy, moon daisy, dog daisy - this common and familiar member of the daisy (Compositae) family can be seen in many habitats including roadsides as well as meadows. The large white daisies with their bright yellow centres appear in May and continue to flower throughout the summer, attracting large numbers of insects. Butterflies, especially the Meadow brown, like Leucanthemum, and apparently 69 species use it as a larval foodplant. Oxeye daisy plants have a bitter juice and have had a number of medicinal uses over the years.Oxeye daisies can be transitory in a meadow area, and can often dominate in the first year of establishment. They will appear in profusion after first sowing but may disappear over time. This is because it is a short lived perennial in some situations, relying on reseeding year after year to maintain its numbers. Making sure your meadow is cut annually and raked thoroughly will open up spaces for this plant's seeds to fall and germinate, maintaining its presence in your meadow.
We supply Oxeye daisies in our selected wildflower trays or seed mixes but we also sell it on its own here as seed or trays of small 55cc plug plants.
