Hedge Plants: Stock Friendly Hedge

This hedge mix is ideal for gardens as well as fields where horses graze, as it has no Blackthorn. It has a diverse range of attractive native species, which will make a thick hedge and provide year round interest. A real boon for wildlife, and good for carbon sequestration too. We offer two sizes - premium and standard. Like all the native plants we sell, grown in the UK from UK origin seed.

Hedge Plants: Stock Friendly Hedge

These stock friendly hedge plants are strong 60/90 cm whips in a diverse native mix ideal for paddocks and garden hedges - and of course wildlife! Our premium plant packs are - unusually - three year old plants originating and grown in Yorkshire, and the standard plants a mix of one and two year old plants, mostly from the southeast. All the plants are British grown from UK origin seed.

Although there is no Blackthorn in the mix, avoiding potential damage to horse's eyes, it is good for laying and will make a dense thick hedge. Without Blackthorn - which suckers - this hedge is also ideal for gardens. Great for wildlife, and, for us, all year round interest too. Like all newly planted hedging however, it will need to be protected from animals for the first few years.

This diverse mix is 50% Hawthorn and 10% each of at least 5 species of native hedging plants chosen by us from a list that typically includes Crab Apple, Dog Rose, Dogwood, Field Maple, Guelder Rose, Hazel, Spindle, Field Rose, Wayfaring Tree, Cherry plum (Myrobalan).

How To Plant

To make a stockproof hedge, whips are usually planted at 5 plants per metre in a staggered double row, or 7 plants in a triple row. Plant each species in a small group of 3-5 plants, and each row 50cm or so apart. We sell our stock friendly / garden hedge whips in packs of 50 plants, so enough for 10m of hedge. Please look at our blog for help on establishment and maintenance. Please looks at our tips for planting and initial care of hedge whips.

We offer a nationwide hedge planting service for larger projects; please get in touch for a quote.

Hedge Plant Delivery

Like all our bare root plants, our hedge plants are freshly lifted to order by the grower - they're not sitting around in a warehouse somewhere waiting for a robot to pack them up and speed them on their way! This means that ground conditions might mean a delay of up to a month before you have them delivered. They are bare root, so need to be dormant before delivery too - i.e. if it's too warm in early November delivery might be put back. Orders taken through the spring and summer - from the end of March - are delivered from November.

Stock friendly hedge suppliers: RV Roger, Perrie Hale Forest Nursery, Oakover Nursery.
