Hedge Plants: Stock Friendly Hedge
These stock friendly hedge plants are strong 2 year old whips in a diverse native mix ideal for paddocks and garden hedges - and of course wildlife! The plants are a mix of mostly 60-90cm plants, which will most likely be from Kent or Yorkshire. All the plants are British grown from UK origin seed, and come from growers who are members of the Plant Healthy scheme..
Although there is no Blackthorn in the mix, avoiding potential damage to horse's eyes, it is good for laying and will make a dense thick hedge. Without Blackthorn - which suckers - this hedge is also ideal for gardens. Great for wildlife, and, for us, all year round interest too. Like all newly planted hedging however, it will need to be protected from animals for the first few years.
This diverse mix is 50% Hawthorn and 10% each of 5 species of native hedging plants depending on availability chosen from Crab Apple, Dog Rose, Dogwood, Field Maple, Guelder Rose, Hazel, Wild cherry, Myrobalan and Wild privet. We will include at least 6 minor species for multiple packs.
For the 2024/5 season we are offering selected plants from Plant Healthy certified growers in the UK. They're mostly 60-90cm, but - because of the growing conditions this year - you may find a couple of species grading 40-60cm.
How To Plant
To make a stockproof hedge, whips are usually planted at 5 plants per metre in a staggered double row, or 7 plants in a triple row. Plant each species in a small group of 3-5 plants, and each row 50cm or so apart. We sell our stock friendly / garden hedge whips in packs of 50 plants, so enough for 10m of hedge. Please look at our blog for help on establishment and maintenance. Please looks at our tips for planting and initial care of hedge whips.
We offer a nationwide hedge planting service for larger projects; please get in touch for a quote.
Hedge Plant Delivery
Like all our bare root plants, our hedge plants are freshly lifted to order by the grower - they're not sitting around in a warehouse somewhere waiting for a robot to pack them up and speed them on their way! This means that ground conditions might mean a delay of up to a month before you have them delivered. They are bare root, so need to be dormant before delivery too - i.e. if it's too warm in early November delivery might be put back. Orders taken through the spring and summer - from the end of March - are delivered from November.
