Fruit Trees

Heritage Fruit Trees

We have a rich and half forgotten heritage of fruit trees. As their names often suggest, old varieties have cultural associations particular to their local landscape. Many have stories to tell; the apples that Captain Cook took with him, the apple that fell on Newton's head.

Many fell out of favour not because their fruit was poor, but because it no longer suited changing tastes and food systems. It didn't keep, or it bruised, or the tree cropped irregularly. For amateur gardeners this doesn't matter. Celebrate a little local history and plant some wonderful trees.
