Common Bluebell (Hyacinthoides non-scripta)

Common Bluebell (Hyacinthoides non-scripta)

The Common Bluebell, Hyacinthoides non-scripta, or, confusingly, 'Harebell' (now more likely the common name for Campanula rotundifolia) as the Elizabethans knew it as, is increasingly disappearing as the Spanish Bluebell cousin and its hybrids take over. Unlike them, our native English bluebell has delicate, scented flowers, and is an important early nectar source for several butterflies and bumblebees - like this Common carder bee queen. As a woodland flower, bluebells need shade from the summer sun. Delivery August - October.

Common Bluebell (Hyacinthoides non-scripta) Bulbs

Our bluebell bulbs have UK provenance and are the true form of English Bluebell, unlike many sold today. They are lifted to order and under licence throughout the autumn from a natural population at a croft in Skye, and we've secured reasonable stock for the current season. For larger sites, reckon on planting at densities of up to 25 bulbs per square metre. You can plant at higher rates if you would like.

We also supply British bluebell seed.

Please plant on receipt, as the bulbs can dry out.

Flowers: April - May

Supplier: Ewan Thomson
