Pear Tree - Hessle
Origin: Hessle, near Hull, 1827
Pear Type: Dessert
Flowering Group : 3
Rootstock: Quince A
Size : Maiden (1-2 years old, c.100cm tall)
Harvest : October
Certainly much older than its first recorded date, Hessle was also known as the Hazel pear - there's a Hazel Pear pub in Cheshire where it was grown commercially for the Liverpool market. Its name connects it with the Yorkshire town of Hessle, whose good folk have emailed us to say is categorically not part of Hull. It is the hardiest pear we sell, and will thrive in almost any situation. The fruit is juicy and sweet, but really best for cooking. Hessle is self sterile; see our section on Pollination Groups to find a suitable pollinator.
They will grow up to over 3.5m.
Supplier : R.V. Roger Ltd.
All our pear trees, including Hessle, are bare root, so they are only available between November and April. During lifting season, there will be a delay between placing the order and dispatching due to pressure of orders, which are dealt with in date sequence, and the weather. Orders taken from June-October will be confirmed in late October/ early November after a nursery stock take, for dispatch from November. Please consult our planting and care guide on receipt of your order.
Your purchase helps us support a range of charities, which are related to the products we sell.
