Mazzard Cherry - Hannaford
Prunus avium 'Hannaford' is a variety of edible wild cherry (Prunus avium), or "mazzard". Hannaford flowers earlier than other known varieties, and has very attractive blossom. Mazzards are now very unusual trees, historically associated with the West Country, and the varieties we sell were found in North Devon. Mazzards were, however, once found across England. Michael Gee has written a helpful introduction, "Mazzards" (The Mint Press). Attractive spring blossom is helpful for pollinators, including bees.

We do have bigger trees available on Avium rootstock, which will produce larger trees when mature - around 6m. Please contact us for details. The plants listed here are on Colt rootstock and will grow to around 4m. Please refer to our size guide for details.
All our mazzard trees are bare root, so they are only available between November and April. During lifting season, there will be a delay between placing the order and dispatching due to pressure of orders, which are dealt with in date sequence, and the weather. Orders taken from June-October will be confirmed in late October/ early November after a nursery stock take, for dispatch from November. Please consult our planting and care guide on receipt of your order.
Your purchase helps us support a range of charities, which are related to the products we sell.
