Large Leaved Lime (Tilia platyphyllos)

Large Leaved Lime (Tilia platyphyllos)

Now very rarely found in the wild, the Large Leaved Lime was often planted as a handsome large specimen tree, or in clumps in parkland. Unlike the Small Leaved Lime and Common Lime, the Large Leaved Lime does not sprout side shoots from its base. The Common Lime is a much commoner and naturally recurring hybrid between the two native species. Like all the native trees we sell, the plants we offer are British grown from seed harvested here. Large Leaved Lime (Tilia platyphyllos)

Tilia platyphyllos is a stately well shaped tree that can live to a grand old age. Its flowers, produced in May/June, are a magnet for bees, and its nectar makes lovely honey. Needs moist, deep soil. Large leaved lime hybridises freely with T. cordata, which complicates things. Like Small leaved lime, Tilia platyphyllos is attractive to bees and butterflies - in the Middle Ages it was grown specifically for honeybees.

Like all the native trees we sell, our Large Leaved Limes are grown in the UK from UK origin seed. They seem to be incredibly difficult to find at the moment. We're selling 60-90cm 2 year old plants at the moment in multiples of 5, together with some very nice half standards.

Suppliers: RV Roger, British Hardwood Trees.

See our planting and size guide for details and tips on planting. These Large Leaved Lime trees are all bare root, and are consequently available for delivery from November until March (please ask if you are interested in pot grown plants). During the lifting season there may be up to a month's delay between placing the order and dispatching, due to weather conditions or pressure of orders, which are dealt with in date sequence. Orders for Large Leaved Lime trees placed between March and September are confirmed in October ready for dispatch from November.
