Myrobalan (Prunus cerasifera)

Myrobalan, or Cherry Plum, was introduced to Britain from Asia, but so long ago we have included it here. It is a useful, hardy and fast growing small tree, with occasional spines. Cherry Plums make a good windbreak, lay well, and look good in a hedge; they are a major component of our Edible Hedge mix. Although normally associated with light soils we have a couple of Cherry Plums in our orchard which do well on clay. Traditionally they were often planted around fruit trees as protection from the wind. They are among the first trees into blossom (from February), and their masses of pretty white flowers swarm with honeybees on a warm day. Invaluable early season forage.

The Myrobalan tree will occasionally also bear fruit, which is red or yellow and rather sharp, but good for the birds or for jam.

Like all the native trees we sell, our Myrobalan are grown in the UK from UK origin seed.

Suppliers: Perrie Hale Forest Nursery, RV Roger, British Hardwood Trees.

Your purchase helps us support a range of charitieswhich are related to the products we sell.

See our planting and size guide for details and tips on planting. These Cherry Plum plants are all bare root, and are consequently available for delivery from November until March (please ask if you are interested in pot grown plants). During the lifting season there may be up to two weeks delay between placing the order and dispatching, due to weather conditions or pressure of orders, which are dealt with in date sequence. Orders for Prunus cerasifera placed between March and September are confirmed in October ready for dispatch from November.
