Myrobalan (Prunus cerasifera)
Prunus cerasifera will occasionally bear fruit, which is red or yellow and rather sharp, but good for the birds or for jam. Its main value, however, is its very early blossom - even before Blackthorn. This isn't just decorative - it's an increasingly important source of forage in February / March for early flying bees in particular, and makes it into our top ten plants for bees. Technically - although it's a close relation to Blackthorn - it's an archaeophyte, i.e. it came to the UK some time over 2000 years ago. Unlike Blackthorn it doesn't sucker, which makes it a good candidate for an urban or suburban hedge.
Like all the native trees we sell, our Myrobalan are grown in the UK from UK origin seed. We sell 60-90cm 2 year old Prunus cerasifera plants in multiples of 5.
